Questionable rings

Andrea Coppolino Matteo Morandi

In the Men’s Rings final competition at the 2008 Summer Olympics I watched three perfect exercises: those ones of the Chinese Chen Yibing and of the two Italians, Matteo Morandi and Andrea Coppolino. The latter was really worth a medal, a silver one. The jury decided differently: silver medal for Yang Wei, China, and bronze medal for Oleksandr Vorobiov, Ukraine. Both exercises were far to be perfect. In particular, Yang Wei did several errors and a bad dismount. Really a pity that the final ranking was not the result of the value of the athletes but of a questionable choice of jury to save the poorer Wei’s and Vorobiov’s exercises.
